A screw is an inclined plane that is twisted about its length. It provides a circular motion. Simple screw machines essentially have threaded cuttings on their parts.
The rotation of the threaded shaft of the screw is converted into linear form and causes the screw to travel along its axis.
Depending on the direction of the force applied to the screw, it shifts from a lower position to a higher position or from a higher position to a lower position. These types of machines typically serve to fasten and hold two things together.
Examples of Screw Simple Machines
1. Screw pump.
As the name itself indicates, a screw pump is an example of a simple screw machine. It is also known as a water screw and is used to move the fluid along the axis of the screw.
It is a positive displacement pump that replaces the process of a one-off screw and one or more screw for the job.
2. Bulb.
It rotates the bulb back to the holder using adequate torque twisted force for bulb rotation.
The thread cuttings on the bulb base and inside the holder perfectly align with each other; this is why the bulb is one of the primary examples of a simple screw machine.
3. Jar Lid.
The threads on the neck of a jar and the inside of the lid are appropriately matched. The torsion force on the lid allows the lid to move in a circular range of motion to allow the lid to become attached to the jar.
If the torsion force is performed in the opposite direction, then the lid moves in the opposite direction, and the lid is removed, thus demonstrating the traits of a screw simple machine.
4. Drill Machine.
The internal mechanical mechanism inside the drilling machine will assist the drill bit in rotating, as well as moving in a circular direction.
This circular motion that the drill bit is experience will converted into axial linear motion (depending on the direction of motion) and demonstrates the operation of a simple screw machine.
5. Bolt.
A bolt is one of the most basic examples of a simple screw machine. It is a mechanical tool used to hold two objects together with the help of a washer and a nut.
The bolt has thread cuttings along its entirety that perfectly mate to the threads on the inside of a nut.
6. Bottle Caps.
Our tendency to view machines only in terms of object combinations tends to stem from our disregard of the machines that are in our every day lives.
For example, as you unscrew and screw a bottle cap, you are using a simple machine called the screw machine.
7. Faucets.
The faucet is another example of basic screw machines that function as control devices for fluids.
The twist of a faucet in the clockwise or anticlockwise direction changes the flow of water, or fluid! It is a screw machine in action.
8. Car Jack.
A screw jack is a device used to convert rotational motion to linear motion. The threads in the worm screw or screw jack facilitate the vertical push or pull of the object depending on the direction of rotation.
A car jack is typically small and portable but able to sustain the weight of the car; arguably, this is one of the primary examples of a screw machines.
9. Wine Corkscrew.
A corkscrew is a metal screw with a wooden handle. To use the wine bottle corkscrew the user holds onto the corkscrew and applies a twisting force until the screw has penetrated into the cork sufficiently enough.
Finally, the cork can be easily pulled out by a vertical upward pull. In this case, we have a simple screw machine.
10. Gas Tank Cap.
We typically take some appliances that we use each day for granted whenever we do not recognize their existence as simple machines.
One example is a gas tank cap. A torsion force applied to fix the gas tank cap on the top of a fuel tank helps the gas tank cap act as a simple screw machine.
